Fic...yeah...
Cast // Randall the Elevator Boy and Louis the Teal-Armored Security Guard
Title // NPCs Have Feelings Too!
Takes Place // Shortly after Team Failboat's Mission
Randall the Elevator Operator really, really needed a drink. He had just been chewed out by his boss for letting five intruders into the upper levels, and that wasn’t even the worst part of his night.
He walked over to the bar and sat next to Louis the security guard. Louis was tough. Far, far tougher than Randall. He was also Randall’s older brother, and the one who had gotten Randall his job. Before Louis talked the manager into hiring Randall, he’d been living at home with their mother. Well, that hadn’t changed. But at least he had some income now. And running the elevator was a great job! It had given Randall lots of time to work on his novel. It was called Randy the Super Elevator Operator, and it was about a boy who operated a super elevator that could go anywhere. He used it to be a super awesome hero. Randall’s mother really loved it!
Louis didn’t look at Randall as he sat down. He’d gotten pretty bruised up during the fight. “Not in the mood, Bro.”
Randall ignored his brother’s surly attitude. Louis was never in the mood anymore. If Randall waited for him to be cheerful, they’d never talk at all. He ordered a drink and looked over at Louis. “I’ve had a seriously rough day.”
Louis turned his head, glaring. “Oh, have you? Cause I don’t see your bruises.”
Randall gave him a hurt look. “They’re inside.” He touched his chest. “On my soul.”
Louis rolled his eyes and looked away. “Idiot,” he muttered. Randall chose to ignore him. His brothers words could never bruise his soul. He’d grown soul callouses.
“I mean, I’m not a big tough security guard like you! They can’t just expect me to keep out scary people! Scary people can hurt me!” He looked over at Louis. “Can you talk them into giving me armor? I think that’d help.”
“No,” Louis said. “And keeping out intruders is your one damn job. You could have tried.”
“I did! I told them they weren’t supposed to be there, but the guy--” he shuddered. “He was like an evil Billy Idol. I swear to god, man, it’s a miracle I held my bladder.”
Louis looked over at him again. “Evil Billy Idol, huh? Long coat, weird face?”
Well, the cheekbones had been pretty weird. Randall nodded.
Louis looked even more annoyed, if possible. “That guy purred.”
Randall blinked at him. “Oh. Is he your boyfriend or something?”
“No, dipshit.” Louis pointed at his eye. “He’s the one who gave me this.”
Randall winced. “Bad break-up?”
“He’s one of the guys who kidnapped Jade!”
“Oh, really bad break-up. You coulda told me.”
Louis opened his mouth to argue more, then changed his mind, raising a hand in a gesture of surrender.
Randall reached over and patted Louis’ shoulder. “I’m here for you, Bro. You couldn’t have known he’d turn out to be a crazy person.”
Louis sighed and ordered another beer.
Randall took a sip of his drink. That was enough comforting his brother’s pain. He had more soul bruises to share.
“And that repair guy! He was such a jerk. Elevator Operator is a very respectable job! At least it’s not… toilets or whatever he was supposed to be repairing.”
“And maybe in ten years, you’ll be promoted to Elevator Manager.”
Randall brightened. “You think?” No one could possibly make fun of him then. Elevator Manager. He could get his own apartment! Maybe.
“Sure. You keep that dream alive.” Louis took a long swig of his beer.
No longer an Elevator Boy, he’d be an Elevator MAN. Short for MANager. He couldn’t wait. Except… oh. “But what if they fire me for today’s… slip-up that wasn’t really my fault at all?”
Louis shrugged. “I got my own problems, Randy. How bout I let you know when I start caring about yours?”
Randall looked surprised, then apologetic. “Sorry, I guess you would, with the big break-up and all.”
Louis glared at him. Again. “Or the part where I was beaten by a crazy Billy Idol impersonator and shot by his tiny girlfriend. Or where the woman I was sworn to protect was kidnapped. By people you let up.”
Randall glanced away, frowning. “Gee, sorry Lou. You coulda just said you didn’t want to talk.”
Louis stared at him for a moment in angry disbelief, then went back to his drink. Their mother would kill him if he snapped and beat up Randall.
They sat in silence for a moment until a man with a suit came over and sat on the other side of Randall. His eyes were red from crying, and he ordered two shots right away.
Randall looked over at him. “Here to join the bad day party?”
The man nodded, wiping at his eyes. “My displacer beast, Fluffermuffins, he got free in the fight. I don’t know what happened to him. I put up fliers, but…” he shook his head and downed the first shot. “I might never see his cute little tentacles again.”
Randall and Louis both looked at him sympathetically.
“That’s rough, buddy,” Randall said.
